Sunset over the sea in Brindisi, the city that looks east

Sunset over the sea in Brindisi, the city that looks east

In brief: Brindisi sits on the Adriatic facing east, yet from late April to mid-August the sun sets over the sea from some points along the northern coast. This happens because north of the harbour the coast turns northwest, and ahead lies open sea right where the sun goes down in summer. The best spot is Punta Penne, from 24 April to 20 August; further west the period shortens, down to a few weeks around 21 June. The rest of the year the sun sets over land. On our sunset map you can choose the day and see where to watch it from, with the time.

Anyone arriving in Brindisi in summer is usually looking for the same thing: a place to watch the sun go down into the sea. On the Italian Adriatic coast this isn't a given, because the sea lies to the east: the sun rises from the water in the morning and sets behind the countryside in the evening. This applies to Brindisi for most of the year too. But here there's an exception, and it falls in the months when the evenings are longest.

A coast that turns northwest

The port of Brindisi faces east. Just to the north, though, the coast doesn't continue straight: it turns northwest and runs towards Torre Guaceto, with a series of headlands and small coves. From some of these headlands, looking northwest, there's no land ahead but open sea for kilometres.

Meanwhile, the sun doesn't always set in the same place. On 21 December it goes down to the southwest, behind the countryside. As the months pass the sunset point shifts north, and from late April it enters that slice of open sea: for a few weeks or a few months, depending on the spot, the sun goes down into the water.

Where and when, point by point

We took the coastline from OpenStreetMap and, point by point, looked for directions where there's only sea ahead for at least 15 kilometres. Then we compared these with the direction of the sun at sunset, day by day. Here's the period from the best point of each stretch, from east to west:

Coastal stretchSunset over the seaDays per year
Punta Penne and Cala Lopiafrom 24 April to 20 Augustabout 119
Punta Pateddafrom 30 April to 15 Augustabout 108
Case Bianchefrom 6 May to 8 Augustabout 95
Giancolafrom 26 May to 20 Julyabout 56
Torre Testafrom 28 May to 17 Julyabout 51
Towards Isolotto dell'Agliofrom 10 June to 4 Julyabout 25

The further west you go, the more the period narrows around 21 June, the day when the sun sets furthest north. Punta Penne is the first of these points coming from the city, and it's also the one from which you can see it longest. The dates may shift by a day from one year to the next.

What time to go

In the months of sunset over the sea, the sun goes down at 19:35 on 24 April, at 20:22 on 21 June and at 19:41 on 20 August. Arrive at least half an hour early: the most beautiful colours come in the last minutes, when the sun touches the horizon, and just after. On the sunset map you can choose the day with the slider and see the exact time and the points along the coast where the sun sets over the sea.

And the rest of the year?

From late August to late April the sun sets over land from the whole Brindisi coast. The sky still colours up, but the sun goes down behind the city and the countryside, not into the water. In those months the map tells you, day by day, what time and in which direction it sets. And Brindisi remains a city that faces east: it's from the sea that the morning light arrives.

Practical tips

  • Check the sky to the northwest: a band of low clouds on the horizon is enough to hide the sun in the last minutes. Forecasts and sea conditions for each stretch are on the Weather and sea page.
  • Combine the sunset with a swim: at Punta Penne and Giancola there are free beaches. You'll find them in our guide to Brindisi beaches.
  • Respect the places: take away what you brought.
