The Bastione Carlo V stands beside Porta Mesagne. Ferdinand of Aragon began it and Giovanni Battista Loffredo completed it in 1551, as the inscription on the south-west corner records. Loffredo raised it, added the lower platform and walled up the upper gun ports.
It is pentagonal, with three gun ports on the flanks. On the south-west corner you'll recognise the coats of arms of Charles V and of the Viceroy of Naples Don Pedro de Toledo, and below them Loffredo's insignia.
Inside, under the barrel vaults, exhibitions, concerts and events are held today: if you find the doors open, go in.
