Nothing is left of the San Giorgio bastion: it stood here, where the entrance to Brindisi Centrale station and the big car park are today. It was pentagonal and had been built in the sixteenth century by Ferdinando de Alarcón.
It was pulled down in 1865 to make room for Piazza Crispi and the station, opened that very year, when the area was growing fast. Until February 1866, when the line to Lecce opened, this was the end of the Adriatic railway.
