Porta Reale stood here, the gate that closed the city off from the sea: the sea brought trade, but also the risk of invasion. It was demolished in the eighteenth century during the harbour works directed by Andrea Pigonati.
Where the walls were, there is now the long harbour front. Come at sunset, when the sky turns pastel.
