Brindisi Itinerary: How to Plan the Perfect Visit

In short: In one day, all on foot: in the morning the Roman Columns and Piazza Duomo, then the seafront to the Alfonsino Castle, a traditional lunch, the Archaeological Museum in the afternoon, the Sailor Monument at sunset and an aperitivo and dinner in the centre. Over a weekend, add Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna, Santa Maria del Casale and the sea at Torre Guaceto.

Brindisi Itinerary in One Day

This itinerary is for those who arrive early in the morning and want to see as much as possible in 8-10 hours. All on foot, no car needed.

9:00 · Roman Columns and Piazza Duomo

Start at the Roman Columns, a stone's throw from the harbour. The surviving column is 18.74 metres tall and is the symbol of the city. From there, walk to Piazza del Duomo (2 minutes): visit the Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum.

10:30 · A walk along the seafront

Follow the Lungomare Regina Margherita to the Castello Alfonsino (20 minutes on foot). From the pier you get a good view of the harbour entrance and the ferries to Greece.

13:00 · A traditional lunch

Head back to the centre and have lunch in one of the restaurants of the old town. Be sure to order ciciri e tria or orecchiette with turnip tops, Brindisi's signature dishes.

14:30 · Archaeological Museum

Visit the Francesco Ribezzo Archaeological Museum in Piazza del Duomo. The 1-2 hours here fly by among bronzes, Greek remains and Messapian vases.

17:30 · Monumento al Marinaio

Take the motobarca to the Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia. The view of the harbour from up there is the best in the city. Stay for the sunset if time allows.

18:30 · Aperitivo in old Brindisi

The bars in the area serve excellent cocktails with a selection of Apulian snacks (pettole, taralli, leccina olives).

21:00 · Dinner and an evening stroll

Have dinner in the old town, with fresh fish or traditional dishes. After dinner, a stroll along Corso Umberto I rounds off the day beautifully.

Brindisi Itinerary in 2 Days (Weekend)

Day 1: Old town and harbour

Follow the one-day itinerary above, at a gentler pace. Add:

  • Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna: a sixteenth-century late-Renaissance palazzo with a splendid inner courtyard, now used for events
  • Villaggio Pescatori: a historic part of the city where Brindisi's fishermen settled, with their colourful houses and the fish market

Day 2: Surroundings and culture

  • Morning: Church of Santa Maria del Casale (4 km, by car or taxi)
  • Mid-morning: the seaside quarter of old Brindisi and the old harbour district
  • Afternoon: a trip to the largest urban park in Apulia, the Parco del Cillarese, or a day at the beaches of Torre Guaceto (20 km)
  • Evening: a fish dinner in the old town and a stroll along the seafront.

Practical Tips for Your Itinerary

Best season: April-June and September-October. The weather is mild, the city isn't crowded and it's lovely to explore on foot.

Comfortable shoes: Brindisi's old town has plenty of cobblestones and ups and downs. Avoid high heels.

Museum hours: the Archaeological Museum is closed on Mondays. The Cathedral closes in the middle of the day (1-4 pm). Always check before you go.

Parking: if you arrive by car, use the free car parks on Via Spalato.

Practical info: the railway station is in the centre, and the seafront is a 15-minute walk along Corso Umberto I. The airport is 4 km away and can be reached by shuttle bus (€1.20) or taxi (about €20).
