The Fishermen's Village, in the Casale quarter, was designed in 1938 by the engineer Ugo D'Alonzo and completed in 1959. It was meant to house the fishermen of the Sciabiche, the seafaring quarter on the other shore of the Seno di Ponente, demolished in the early decades of the twentieth century because its houses were considered crumbling and lacking basic services.
It was a forced move: fishermen and boatmen found themselves in the Casale, until then the quarter of well-off Brindisi families' villas.
Today the village has come back to life, especially in spring and summer, with events and food linked to the traditions of the sea. The motobarca gets you there easily.
