The Swabian Castle, also called the Castello di Terra, looks over the inner harbour from the edge of the old town. Frederick II had it built around 1227, in the years the emperor was in Brindisi, and the builders were his own soldiers, waiting to sail for the crusade. They used stone taken from ancient monuments already in ruins.
In 1480 Ferdinand I of Aragon adapted it to firearms: he added a second ring of walls, lower and thicker, with low round towers. Hence the name Swabian-Aragonese Castle.
It isn't always open: it can be visited on special days, such as the FAI days, and on some weekends by booking. Check before you go.
