The Sciabiche was the fishermen's quarter, where they spread out and mended the sciabica, their net, in the street. The houses are gone now, but the name remains.
It was here in 1647 that the revolt broke out that spread across the whole viceroyalty. People were protesting against taxes, crushing in a time of famine. It was a violent uprising: the crowd burned the palazzo of the tax collector Scolmafora and killed another collector, Carlo Della Verità. Mayor Glianes was forced to give way to the lawyer Leanza, who was popular with the people and, together with Archbishop Odriscol, managed to restore calm.
