San Benedetto is one of the finest Romanesque churches in the city, and it is still open for worship. Today it is a rectory church of the Cathedral parish.
Its story begins with the Benedictine convent of Santa Maria Veterana, perhaps already active before the eleventh century and supported by Goffredo, Count of Conversano and lord of Brindisi, and his wife Sichelgaita. In the eighteenth century the nuns built a new convent that covered the old façade: the portal was taken down and rebuilt on the right side, where you still see it. The Benedictines left in 1866, under the suppression laws.
Look for the medieval cloister, the most atmospheric part. The Baroque altars, on the other hand, are gone: a restoration in the 1950s removed them.
