Church of the Madonna della Scala

In the quarter that belonged to the Amalfitan colony in the twelfth century, a small church hides among the houses, the same colour as the façades around it: the Madonna della Scala. The name comes from Scala, the village on the Amalfi coast where much of the community came from, and it gave its name to the whole quarter.

The quarter sits on the high ground above the Seno di Levante and, despite rebuilding, still looks like a medieval village: it's worth getting lost in its lanes.

The church has been transformed many times since the nineteenth century. Among the few original features, look for the stone cross on the pediment, with the Angevin lily of the Salesi family, and behind the altar the fresco of the Madonna della Scala, by an unknown artist and of unknown date.
