Beneath the great rudder of the Monumento al Marinaio lies a quiet place many visitors don't expect: the crypt-shrine. It is shaped like an upturned hull, with pointed arches, and on the altar stands the Madonna "Star of the Sea".
On the black marble slabs on either side of the entrance are the names of some 6,000 sailors of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy who died between the Unification of Italy and 1933. Before the altar, four white marble slabs honour the Gold Medal holders of both World Wars.
On your way out, on the upper terrace, look for the two anchors from the Austro-Hungarian cruiser SAIDA, later renamed Venezia, and two guns from Austro-Hungarian submarines. The tall walls on either side of the rudder imitate the sides of a ship: you climb them by twin staircases.
