Beneath the Teatro Verdi lies a piece of Roman Brindisi. The archaeological area of San Pietro degli Schiavoni, in dialect San Pietru dilli Scauni, takes its name from the quarter that had a church dedicated to the saint and was home to the Slavic and Albanian immigrants who arrived from the fifteenth century.
In the early 1960s some of the quarter's houses were pulled down to build the new Law Courts. Medieval remains came to light and were partly destroyed by the bulldozers; then the Superintendency's excavations uncovered a Roman-era quarter.
In 1967 it was decided to build the municipal theatre here, and the discovery changed the plan: the architect Enrico Nespega designed a theatre suspended on a steel structure, so the excavations remain visible beneath the building. A rare solution, and worth seeing.
