San Paolo Eremita is a Gothic church built in the fourteenth century by the Franciscans together with their convent, with funds from Robert of Anjou. It stands where the house of Margarito of Brindisi, a Norman admiral, once stood.
The façade is nineteenth-century, rebuilt because the earlier one was in danger of falling. The single-nave interior is rich in Baroque altars and their paintings: look for the wooden statue of Saint Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Perez Noguerol family, the Deposition on the altar of the Crucifix and the Madonna of the Earthquake, which the people of Brindisi consider miraculous.
In the sacristy is a cupboard from 1725 by a local cabinetmaker, and here and there fragments of fourteenth-century frescoes survive.
