The First World War memorial rises in Piazza Santa Teresa. It is in white Carrara marble, the work of the Brindisi sculptor Edgardo Simone.
It had a troubled journey. The first planned site was the square in front of the station, but Simone refused it. It was inaugurated on 22 November 1931 by King Victor Emmanuel III in Piazza Dionisi, on the seafront, but the sculptor didn't like that spot either: in 1938 it was dismantled and moved temporarily to Piazza della Vittoria. Its final home, the present one, came in 1940.
