The Cathedral, dedicated to the Visitation and to Saint John the Baptist, is the heart of Piazza Duomo. It was consecrated in 1089 and completed in 1143, but the earthquake of 1743 badly damaged it, and what you see is largely the later reconstruction.
Of the medieval church the basilica plan survives, very similar to that of San Nicola in Bari. The statues on the façade depict Saint Leucius, Saint Theodore of Amasea, Saint Lawrence of Brindisi and Saint Justin de Jacobis: they date from 2007.
Go in for the fragments of the original mosaic floor, the sixteenth-century wooden choir and the eighteenth-century paintings. The relics of Saint Theodore are also kept here. The bell tower beside it is from the eighteenth century.
