In Piazza Duomo, look up at the façade of a fourteenth-century palazzo: the Loggia Balsamo is a balcony supported by corbels above two pointed arches. The palazzo is named after the family that bought it in the early nineteenth century; according to a tradition never confirmed by documents, the Angevin mint was here.
The best part is the corbels: nine of them, each with four allegorical figures, thirty-six in all. The number is probably no accident: in medieval symbolism four stood for the earth and nine, a multiple of three, for the order of the world. Look at them one by one.
