The De Torres fountain in Piazza della Vittoria is one of the oldest in the city: it was built in 1618 by the Spanish governor Pietro Luigi De Torres, after whom it is named. It received its water from the Vasche Limarie, where the aqueduct ended, and served above all the market held in the square, then called Piazza delle Vettovaglie and later Piazza del Mercato.
The basin has a story of its own: it is marble, and in the Middle Ages it was a font for baptism by immersion.
A curiosity: when it's emptied for cleaning you can see that the base isn't perfectly level, but slightly tilted.
