Chiesa del Cristo

The Church of Christ, also called the Church of the Crucifix or of San Domenico, was founded in 1232 by the Dominican friar Nicola Paglia of Giovinazzo. You'll recognise it by its gabled façade, with alternating bands of white and grey stone, a stepped row of small arches at the top, a crucifix and a large rose window.

Inside is a single nave and two works not to miss: the Enthroned Madonna, a wooden sculpture in a niche to the right of the entrance, and the Crucifix near the high altar, perhaps by a German hand. They are considered among the most important painted wooden sculptures of the thirteenth century in Apulia.

Right beneath the church run the walls of 1464 built by Ferdinand of Aragon, with the arch of Porta Lecce.
