The Tancredi fountain stands at the edge of the city, on the road to San Vito that follows the ancient Via Traiana. It was a drinking trough for the animals arriving in the city and was also used to irrigate the surrounding fields.
There may have been a fountain here as early as Roman times, but today's was commissioned in 1192 by Tancred, the Norman king of Sicily, for the wedding of his son Roger to Irene Angelina, daughter of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II, held in Brindisi Cathedral. Look for the inscription: it also recalls Roger's coronation on that occasion.
